Introduction
A flipped classroom is the complete opposite of the way a traditional teaching class takes place.
In the flipped model, students get their lectures at home at their convenience and do the
assignments in their classroom. How is it different and how does it help?
Let us explore with our Civic Hero series this month.
Expected Outcomes
1. Students will be able to understand better through video comprehension, over the internet. It
eliminates redundancy and improves efficiency in learning.
2. Students will think and analyse the national issue, and be motivated to solve the same
3. Students will be motivated to volunteer for the cause and learn by doing
Steps for the activity
1. Distribute the handout given below to the students and ask them to read the story at home.
2. Ask them to watch the videos of Roti bank, Mumbai through given links and prepare for the class
assignment.
3. Give at least 2-3 days’ time to prepare

D. Sivanandhan was the Police Commissioner of Mumbai and was promoted as part of the
aftermath of the November 2008 Mumbai attacks. He is one of India's most well-known and highly
regarded IPS (Indian Police Service) officers. His career spanned multiple high-profile postings
over 35 years, and he is known for his use of strategy & intelligence to uphold the rule of law. He
served as an active member of the special task force in the National Security Council Secretariat,
and he helped in restructuring India's internal and external national security provisions.
As a mentor to the Mumbai Roti Bank, his vision and ideas have guided the organisation in
achieving its vision and helped it in trying to expand its operations.
The NGO operates in a very simple manner. They pick up excess food from weddings, events,
hotels, cafeterias, housing societies and deliver it to thousands of hungry people who live in slums
or on the footpath. They also deliver daily meals to kids of Drona Foundation, Dharavi and the
relatives of cancer patients at Tata Memorial Hospital. Other than that, they distribute freshly
cooked food and raw grains to their regular beneficiaries. The NGO has a dedicated helpline
through which people can contact the NGO, and their dedicated vans pick up the excess food and
redistribute it promptly, thus ensuring that the quality of the food remains intact.

Assignment to be done in the classroom
The teacher can display the questions and ask students to write them or he/she can hold the
discussion on the same.
1. Who is Mr. D. Sivanandan? What motivates him to start Roti bank?
2. Do you think such a small initiative can solve the national issue of hunger in India? If yes, How?
3. How you, as an ACTIZEN can participate in the cause?
4. Write a letter to the school principal/society president to organize the Roti bank collection camp
and contact Roti bank to collect the same from your vicinity.
Note Schools outside Mumbai also can research for Roti bank, or any other similar NGO and
collaborate with them.
